Rustad, he has penned a personal "certificate" note attesting to his purchase of this stamp, only 300 stamps were overprinted with the "Columbia" surcharge and only a very few still remain in this mint NH post office condition, a truly amazing stamp and the first time we have ever offered a mint NH example of this Newfoundland rarity, we had to go back into the 1980's to find another NH example being offered and at that time it brought full catalog (Image)

1870 Riel Canadian Republic Essay in Red, Unused, deep dark color, four clear to large margins all around, Very Fine+ appearing example of this exceedingly rare stamp, In 1869 Louis Riel led a rebellion in the Red River Settlement area to create a Provisional Government and hence they issued some stamps, there are reported to be six examples known in red-brown and one in green, none have denominations and each has an image of "Liberty", they were never put into use but there is one known on a faked used cover, a very interesting and rare item from a very controversial time in Canadian history, this is the first example we have ever seen, we have included some collateral material pertaining the this issue and Louis Riel, (ENV 750-1,000) (Image)
