1853 1p Queen Victoria An impressive plate proof block of sixteen printed in black directly to thin white card; third stamp in second row (Position 19) shows the Major Fresh Entry plate variety with very prominent markings in all four value tablets, along top frameline, etc. Trivial surface scuffs on three proofs in second column, a beautiful positional proof block showing the major plate variety, VF

Provenance: Claude Cartier, SG Auctions, September 1977; Lot 48

The plate variety is discussed at length in Argenti "The Postage Stamps of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia" on pages 10-12. It is our understanding that it only occurred on the Plate I proof sheet (printed in black on wove or on thick card). No stamps were printed from this plate; however all of the issued stamps were printed from Plate II. (Image)

Cat No:1

1853 1p Queen Victoria A fabulous plate proof block of sixteen printed in black on yellowish wove paper - quite unusual as from past experience we see a lot more plate proof on the distinctive thin white card. The third stamp in the second row (Position 19) shows the Major Fresh Entry plate variety with very prominent markings in all four value tablets, along top frameline, etc. Creased in top sheet margin and along lower two rows and thinned at lower right mostly in the margin, faults on two proofs. A UNIQUE positional block and most likely the largest surviving proof block on wove paper, VF appearance; the ideal companion to the previous lot (ID058676).

The finer of the two recorded covers, paying 5 pence "Port-to-Port" letter rate to USA, overpaid by 1 penny. The other is ex. "Foxbridge" (John DuPont; Private Treaty 1988)

Originally intended for the 6 pence overland rate to the United States, the cover was put on a Cunard ship to Boston instead. The rate was 5 pence (with 5c US postage due by the recipient). No credit was given for the 1p overpayment. Cover was mailed 6 days after Nova Scotia converted their currency from Pence to decimal (cents and dollars). The former 5 pence "Port-to-Port" via British Packet rate became 10 cents. Pence issues were still used until the arrival of the Cents issue stamps at post offices in early October of 1860. (Image)
