Cat No:1

1861 (December 4) Blue folded lettersheet in an excellent state of preservation, mailed from St. John's to Boston and franked an unusually sound horizontal strip of four of the One penny brown violet on thick white wove paper, clear to mostly large margins all around, light oval barred cancellations. St. John's Newfoundland Paid DE 4 1861 just ties corner of left stamp, which is further tied by a clear Boston DEC 17 B. Pkt 5 circular datestamp; reverse struck twice with Boston Mass DEC 17 CDS postmark. A fabulous and exceedingly rare cover - BY FAR THE FINER OF ONLY TWO KNOWN. Very Fine (Unitrade 1)

Expertization: 1983 Enzo Diena certificate

Provenance: Dale-Lichtenstein, Sale 2, November 1968; Lot 608
Claude Cartier, September 1977; Lot 42
Dr. Chan Chin Cheung, Christie's (New York), September 1995; Lot 75 - where it sold for US$57,500 hammer.

Census: Just one other cover with this franking paying the St. John's to Port 4 pence rate to USA is recorded in the Robert H. Pratt census (see page 178). Dated 1857, it is faulty with all stamps heavily creased by a horizontal filing fold.

THE FINER OF ONLY TWO KNOWN COVERS TO THE UNITED STATES (OR ANYWHERE ELSE) BEARING THIS FRANKING. ALSO IMPRESSIVE IS THE FACT THAT THIS BEARS (TOGETHER WITH THE OTHER KNOWN STRIP OF FOUR ON COVER) THE LARGEST NUMBER OF PENCE STAMPS OF ANY OF THE 280 RECORDED COVERS, ACCORDING TO PRATT HANDBOOK. A WONDERFUL SHOWPIECE IN ALL RESPECTS. (Image)
