1872 (May 21) Small white envelope in pristine condition with enclosed letter, bearing the much scarcer 6c black perf 12½-13 (smaller perf holes) cancelled by light grid, large circular Summerside P.E. Island MAY 21 datestamp at left and mailed to Troy, New Hampshire; no backstamp as customary for mail to the United States. Certainly the finest 6 cent Colonial rate cover among the 30-35 known, most of which are franked with the more common perf 12 gauge. A great cover for the specialist, VF (Unitrade 15c; SG 45b) Expertization: 2019 Greene Foundation certificate (as #15) Interestingly enough, James Lehr wrote the following observation "an interesting variety is the 6¢ value perforated throughout perf 12½ (Machine E). Only one sheet is believed to be so perforated, since only one stamp and one cover is known." The 6c perf 12½-13 commands a substantial premium over the usual perf 12 stamp. Yet, Unitrade specialized listed cover prices remains identical for both perforations. Stanley Gibbons suggested catalogue value for the perf 12½-13 on cover is £2,000. (Image)
