London PAID 3 JY 3 1822 full circle in red on front. Fine HALIFAX AU 18 1822 fleuron handstamp in black on front. Rated 2/2 stg pre-paid in red on front (1/- inland postage London to Falmouth, plus 1/2 packet postage), Rated 1N8 cy (Halifax – Quebec) plus 1N6 (Quebec – York), total 3N2 cy collect in red on front. No receiving marks. Likely carried by packet “Francis Freeling” [Falmouth 8 Jul, Halifax due14 Aug-late!]. “Refused” in manuscript on reverse, indicating recipient refused the letter, likely due to high cost. This is likely a house named after Fort Cataraqui, the original Fort Frontenac, later Kingston. Endorsed “A Dobbs” and “Messers Smith? and T?.. Agent, Liverpool”, Later crossed out. Unusual boxed No 1 hand stamp in black on back. SHIP handstamp and NEW YORK APR 1 full circle both in red on front. Rated: Pd 1/1 stg manuscript in brown inland postage paid to Liverpool. 20 ½ ms (cents ship letter fee of 2c plus 18 ½ c overland to border) manuscript in red on front.
