1845 Folded cross-border cover sent April 12 from Oswego, NY to the Warden at Kingston Penitentiary, rated ‘25’(¢ US) as a double letter (80-150 miles), converted to ‘1/3’ plus a 2½% EXCHANGE SURCHARGE, which should have been only 1/3½ but instead the ½d was added to each single rate, making a total of 1/4 plus the 3d ferriage charge = total ‘1/7’ collect, filing folds and one tape repair, otherwise a fine and very scarce rate cover, (2½% surcharge was only in effect from May ‘42 to Dec ’43). 1855 Much-forwarded cross border envelope from Philadelphia 5 AP to Guelph (manuscript 'via Hamilton'), rated '10' (cents US) and 6D (Cdn) received 6 AP 1855 and FORWARDED to Galt, received 3 JY and FORWARDED again to Aylmer, finally received (manuscript date) 26 July, forwarding charge manuscript notations 'For'd', 'T 6d' and manuscript pencil '6', a total of nine c.d.s. cancels on front or back, with contents, some cover edge faults, still a fine and attractive cover. 1855 Decorative cross-border envelope with EMBOSSED FANCY 'LACE-LIKE' frame all around the address panel, sent from Rochester 11 AP to Ingersoll, Canada West, US markings include manuscript '10' plus straight line 'PAID' and rate '10' handstamps, with bright red two-line Canadian 'UNITED STATES PAID 6D' exchange office marking on front plus 13 AP receiver on back, tiny age spot UL and a couple of light corner rumples, still very fine and tremendously attractive.
