Interestingly enough, several different denominations (from many different plates) exist with the "R-GAUGE" plate imprint. However, only the Five cent violet shows this imprint on the left margin - reading up - found only on Plate 22, both on regular and thin papers, the latter in our opinion being the toughest. All other "R-GAUGE" imprints show in the right margin and read down. (Image)
