Canada: New Brunswick: 1849 incoming entire from the U.K. to St John, sent from Liverpool Nov. 30 endorsed “p. Hibernia” 1s.2d. packet rate paid by exceptional embossed 1s. green with large margins all and 1d. red-brown imperf. (2), cancelled by “466” barred ovals, mail off-loaded at Halifax en route to New York with St John receiving datestamp of “DE17/1849” on reverse. Also 1856 (Jan. 4) wrapper from Liverpool to New York franked at 1/2oz. standard transatlantic rate to the U.S.A. by exceptional embossed 1s. pale green with Liverpool spoon and curved “PAID” in red, endorsed “p. Steamship” and carried on the “America”. (2 covers) The 1s.2d. packet rate to Canada was specified as being via the U.S.A. by British packet but appears also to have been applied where the final destination was a U.S. port (New York or Boston) but with mail transferred when calling at Halifax en route.
