Canada: New Brunswick: 1792 entire letter from Jonathan Bliss to his wife in Springfield, Mass., headed “St. John New Brunswick/June 26th 1792” and endorsed “Schooner Harmony/New York”, carried privately and entering post on arrival showing straight line “N York July 9” handstamp and with “15” paid in red for onward carriage to Springfield (15c. rate for 151-200 miles from Feb. 20 1792). Driven from Massachussetts, Bliss (1742-1822) in 1785 had accepted the position of attorney general in the newly created province of New Brunswick. In 1790, tiring of cold nights and celibacy, Bliss had returned to Springfield to wed (nearly 20 years his junior) Mary Worthington before his return to Saint John where he purchased a large house previously owned by his friend, Benedict Arnold. Leavitt”, carried as ship letter and entering post on arrival showing straight line “BOSTON” handstamp and ‘Bishopmark’, with “14” paid, representing 4c. ship rate + 10c. onward carriage to Springfield (10c. rate for 60-100 miles from Feb. 20 1792). Canada: New Brunswick: 1796 entire with exceptionally fine two line “St. John, N* B*/Aprile. I 96”, addressed to Isaac Hedden in Fredericton charged 7d. cy. (for carriage between 61 and 100 miles). Rare and early internal usage. In the preceding years British loyalist Hedden (1759-1802), clerk of the House of Assembly and former New Jersey volunteer, had charted much of the area including the post route from the city of Saint John to the Saint Lawrence river.
