Folded printed circular with minutes of "Bank of Upper Canada / General Election" dated June 25, 1859 mailed from Toronto to Bath, England with "PAID 9791 / VIA QUEBEC" bank's charge account number and light red "PAID 3" handstamps in red, shortpays the minimum required printed matter rate of 4d (this particular rate at the time was known as Book Post effective April 20, 1859 to December 1869) or 7c as of July 1 for not over 4 ounces. Carried on the Allan Line "Nova Scotian" from Quebec on July 9 arriving in Liverpool with clear Paid Liverpool Col Packet 19 JY 59 circular datestamp in red, Bath receiver on back. An exceedingly rare printed matter mailed during the Pence era to United Kingdom, VF Provenance: Warren Wilkinson, June 2007; Lot 213 This particular rate and classification, neither a newspaper nor a prices current, may have benefited from a possible preferred rate. 1871 (January 7) Small cover from Windsor, Ont. to Munich, Bavaria via New York by Cunard Line via England, showing PAID handstamp and manuscript rate "18¢" at top right, London PAID 25 JA 71 transit and red oval "PD" handstamp, blue Aachen 26 1 transit and black Munchen 28 JA receiver; 18c prepaid in cash (16c pre-UPU letter rate plus Cunard Line 2c surtax for mail via US Packet New York to England). A lovely prepaid cover to Bavaria, VF This cover was mailed to Bavaria only a few days prior to the unification of the German Empire on January 18, 1871. The rate to Bavaria from February 1870 to late September 1872 was 16c for first quarter ounce. (Image)
