CROSS BORDER TO CANADA. 1830 Stampless NIAGARA CROSS-BORDER entire letter from NEW YORK to YORK, internally dated 17th June 1830. Endorsed “Via Lewiston”. NEW YORK JUN 17 full circle in red on front. Rated 25 (cents due over 400 miles to border) manuscript in red on front. NIAGARA U.C. 23 Jun 1830 double ring handstamp plus clear barred American Postage .. British ..do.. handstamp with rates converted to 1/3 cy plus 6 ½ (2d ferriage and 4 ½ d BNA up to 60 miles, across L Ontario) total 1/9½ d cy due. No receiver. Niagara ceased to be the exchange office in favour of Queenston, effective 6 Jan 1831 [T A Stayner DPMG, GPO Dept Order No 20]. From James Buchanan to James Small Esq, York, U Canada, re finances. 1836 Stampless KINGSTON CROSS-BORDER entire letter from ALBANY to YORK, internally dated Cazanovia (N. Y.) Feb 20th 1836. [Near Syracuse, a long way from Albany]. ALBANY FEB 22 full circle in red on front. Rated 12 ½ manuscript (cents) pre-paid 81 -150 miles to the border, PAID handstamp in red on front (crossed out at Kingston). SACKETS HARBOR.NY FEB single ring handstamp in red, with manuscript 26 date in black on front. Light KINGSTON U.C. FEB 27 double ring h/s. Rate has addition of 4d cy (6c US) to the undercharge 12 ½ c which should have been 18 ¾ c for over 150 miles Albany to border. 1/- BNA included 3d ferriage plus 9d rate for 100-200 miles, total 1 / 4 cy due. 1836 Stampless MISSENT LEWISTON and QUEENSTON CROSS-BORDER letter from FLAMBORO WEST Township (nr Hamilton) to TORONTO. Internally dated August the 9. 1836. Indecipherable small split circle handstamp dated 10 Aug in m/s, plus feint PAID handstamp and rated 4 ½ manuscript all in red on front (rate for under 60 miles). Unclear address, without capitals: “to the hon mr thomas baines secretary to the clergy corporation in taranto”, presumably sent the wrong way - over the border. LEWISTON N. Y. AUG 12 full circle handstamp in blue, where PAID and 4½ crossed through and endorsed, “Supposed to New Toronto U.C.”. Re-routed via QUEENSTON AU 12 1836 double ring handstamp in green. Ongoing rate applied, of 9d cy due (2d ferriage and 7 d BNA for 60 - 100 miles, around L Ontario). Endorsed “Rec’d 20 August 1836”. From Andrew Markle re paying of rents on Clergy lands.
