CROSS BORDER FROM CANADA. 1828 Stampless LEWISTON CROSS-BORDER letter from YORK to BOSTON, internally dated “York 15th April 1828”. No YORK despatch, rated manuscript Paid 7 and 2 in red (7d cy rate for 60 – 100 miles land route around W end of L Ontario to border, plus 2d cy ferriage over Niagara River, before ferriage was officially introduced 5th Feb 1829 - Department Circular No 6). LEWISTON N.Y. oval h/s with manuscript 24 Apr all in black. Paid rates struck though and manuscript 25 [cents] due in black for onward charge to Boston, over 400 miles. No receiver. From James Young, farmer, politician and JP, to Peter Wainwright Jnr Esq, Savings Institution, Boston U.S. Hasty letter asking recipient to call on unresponsive correspondent. Business letter from James T Smith and Co to E D Morgan, Front Street, New York, ref to bill payments and invoice for 2 kegs of Malaya Raisins. JUN 10 full circle in red. manuscript 25 in blue (cents rate due for onward US charge to Racine, over 400 miles). Chatty family letter from Sarah Ann Thompson to her sister, Mrs J M Lawrence, Racine Wisconsin, US. In 1842 transport baron, Charles Thompson built this house called Summer Hill on his estate north of Yorkville. Tears at several seams, all over aging and stained on back. (Image)

TORONTO CANADA NO 12 1851 double split circle, rated CANADA 10 Cts handstamp in black (conversion of 6d cy rate collect to US destinations). No transit or receiving markings onward cross-border to Buffalo. From 5th April 1851 to 30 June 1859 all through rate between Canada and the United States was 6d cy or 10 cents per half ounce. Cross letter from Sarah Thompson to her husband, Mr Frederick Thompson, Buffalo N.Y. , not happy at his plan not to return home but stay away working for another two months. “..can we buy back the time that we shall be separated with fifty times what you can earn..” Endorsed “Av 11” - unknown meaning.
