1829 (July 17) Folded lettersheet mailed from Bergen, New York to East Gwillimbury (served by Newmarket, Ontario post office), American postage "Paid 10" in manuscript, via Youngstown - Niagara border crossing with faint double ring Niagara datestamp and a quite clear three-line AMERICAN POSTAGE / FERRIAGE / FORWARDED cross-border marking IN RED, at 2d ferriage and 9d postage for total 11d to collect. Ex Earle E. Palmer "Upper and Lower Canada Cross-Border Mail to 1851" exhibit, stating this cross-border marking to be: "the only known example handstruck in red.", F-VF (Image)

1843 (May 26) Clean folded cover mailed from Newmarket, U.C. to Toronto, endorsed "Money Letter" in manuscript and assigned Letter Bill No. "332" at top left, neat MONEY-LETTER and PAID handstamps in red, manuscript "1/1½" prepaid with same-ink Newmarket MY 26 1843 double arc dispatch; couple light file folds. According to Horace Harrison this is the EARLIEST MONEY LETTER known to have a Letter Bill number, which enabled the receiving postmaster to check them against the bill; this eventually evolved into the use of registered letter numbers. A significant cover, perfect for a serious registered mail collection, VF Provenance: Horace Harrison, R. 1878 (March 26) Incoming Mail - Yellow cover in pristine condition from Brome, C.E. with clear dispatch and "FREE" marking, well struck Montreal MAR 25 transit on back alongside a superb strike of the extremely rare double ring House of Commons Canada MAR 26 1878 postmark (without "Crown" nor Free) in blue (Davis CP-9i with highest rarity factor of "5"), as a receiving mark. Very few are known and no doubt this the finest and most desirable example, XF (Canada Specialized HC-9) This strike is the same one depicted in the Canada Specialized and Davis catalogues. (Image)

Incoming Mail 1816-1861 to Newmarket, Upper Canada Nice collection displayed on pages with write-up on rates and routes, all incoming mail to Newmarket, Upper Canada. Twenty-one covers, nine from the US and twelve from the UK (including two from Ireland and one privately carried from India entering mail in UK). All stampless except for a mourning cover with British 2p & 4p mailed MY 3 61, insufficiently prepaid with UNPAID 5 handstamp (sent on Cunard ship instead of intended Allan Line).
