Cat No:1

Hellrigl #1, 1881 1a Ultramarine, pin-perforated on European wove paper, complete sheet of 64, setting 1, a fabulously impressive and handsome sheet of the very first stamp of Nepal, possessing full untrimmed selvages showing complete inscriptions and fancy ornaments on all four sides, exceedingly fresh with rich color and detailed impression being excellent for plating showing all sixteen of the constant plate flaws, on fresh white paper, full white original gum that covers the entire sheet as the printing was done on pre-gummed paper in the earliest printings on European wove paper, hinged in the side selvages only, stamps are all never hinged, folded once vertically and three times horizontally which are hardly apparent from the front, all are along the pin-perforations except at bottom which affects the bottom horizontal row, that being said this sheet is in the most remarkable state of preservation possessing full untrimmed selvages measuring 250x325mm making this an outstanding exhibition piece of the greatest importance.Setting 1 of the One Anna is virtually unique in its format. It possesses inscriptions with a outer fancy sheet boarder of sun shaped ornaments on all four sides, plus there are ornaments of two types of spearheads at the sides between the stamps and the side inscriptions. I say virtually unique because setting 1 of the Two Anna first issue is believed to be a similar format, however the only evidence is a sheet reportedly seen in London in 1939 that has not been seen since and no marginal position pieces of this setting are known to exist. While there are two known examples of setting 1 imperforate, the sheet offered here is unique being the only one to have survived of the scarce pen-perforated issue. A fabulous opportunity to acquire one of the world-class rarities of Nepal that has not been on the market in over 35 years; ex-Haverbeck (Scott #1; $19,200.00; S.G. #1; £22,400+; these catalog values represent 64 normal singles).
