1878 Destination JAPAN: Cover from Upsala to YOKOHAMA via Hamburg-Frankfurt-München-Verona-Bologna-Rom-Bari-Brindisi-Alexandria-Suez-Aden-Galle-Penang-Singapore and Hongkong, addressed to a 'Sailor onboard Barque Flying Spur, Capt. Crobt, Yokohama, English Consulate', franked by two singles of 1877 20øre vermilion (UPU rate) tied by "UPSALA 6/5 1878" c.d.s., and on the reverse with Swedish and Italian railway datestamps, Brindisi and Singapore-Hong-Kong Marine-Sorter transit datestamps as well as Hongkong Treaty-Port Yokohama '22. June (1878)' arrival c.d.s. The Swedish adhesives with light brownish stains otherwise fine. This extraordinary cover was carried from Upsala to Brindisi by train, to Alexandria onboard the "Travancore", from Suez to Galle by the "Peshawar", to Hongkong by the "Teheran" and to Yokohama by the "Orissa" (Upsala-Yokohama in 48 days.) ONE OF THE EARLIEST COVERS FROM SWEDEN TO JAPAN. L. Nielsen (987) and P. Holcombe (1988) certificates. (Image)

Alongside vermilion "censorship passed", via "MOJI 2 MAR 05" to Germany w. arrival. "NIDDA 10.4.05". - Sender is General Baronet Kuroki (1844-1923), commander of the 1st army.
the message in german dates"On the war theatre in Manchuria, 20/II 05" and relates "thanks for the friendly lines"." The same day Feb. 20, 1905 the battle of Mukden started, which decided the landside war. Japanese FPO accepted foreign mails (mostly from war observers and journalists) at full UPU tariff. Card toning, bumped corners and small corner crease. Extraordinary item. . ÷ 1905, Germania 5 Pf. Antwortteil mit Beifrankatur 2 Pfg., 3 Pfg. je mit japanischem Stempel "1. Armee 38-2-21 Nr. 12 Feldpostamt" (21. Februar 1905) aus dem russisch-japanischen Krieg 1904/05. Beigesetzt zinnoberroter Ekr. "Zensur passiert" über "MOJI 2 MAR 05" nach Deutschland mit Ankstpl. "NIDDA 10.4.05". - Absender ist General Baron Kuroki (1844-1923), Befehlshaber der 1. Armee. Datierend "Auf dem Kriegsfeld in der Mandschurei, den 20/II 05", der sich in deutscher Sprache "für die freundlichen Zeilen" bedankt. Am 20.2.1905 begann die Schlacht von Mukden, die den Krieg zu Lande entschied. Japanische Feldpostämter nahmen auch Auslandssendungen an (zumeist von Militärbeobachtern und Journalisten), zu vollen Weltpostvereinstarifen. Karte getönt, etwas bestoßen u. kl. Eckbug.
