China, 1918 (17 July) censored envelope (with original letter) from Lawson Aircraft Corporation in U.S.A. to the Mayor of Hankow (23.8) bearing U.S. Washington 2c. and 3c. (latter with sheet edge at foot), tied by "Green Bay/Wis." machine cancellation, with U.S. censor tape at left and Shanghai (20.8) and Hankow c.d.s. on reverse. Original letter solicits capital for the company in exchange for building an aircraft plant in the city, fine and an interesting historical document from the early years of commercial aviation. Estimate HK$ 1,800 - 2,200
Alfred W. Lawson was a pioneering commercial aviation entrepreneur, building an early airliner and receiving some of the first U.S. government airmail contracts. His competitive nature and reputation as an eccentric are reflected in the aggressiveness of the letter, which even asks the mayor for the names of the city's wealthiest citizens in order to also solicit them.
