1948 address label to "USA Zone/Bayern/Germany" endorsed "Gift Parcel" & affixed to a larger piece with rare franking of Robes 5/- on Thin Tinted Paper (undercatalogued at $750 on cover), 5d Ram & 1/3d Bull strip of 3 tied by light 'ST KILDA S2/VIC-AUST' cds, minor blemishes. Virtually all 1940s parcel usages are to Britain. [The Thin Paper 5/- is very rarely seen on any sort of commercial article. This is only the second or third example with Tinted Paper we have seen. It should be worth a lot more than $750 on cover. See also Lot 2355]

1948 Anthony & Hordern & Sons (Sydney) red/white parcel address label registered to Hobart with 1d 2½d 3d x5 & 1/- Lyrebird x2 all with 'AH/&S' perfins & superb 'AIR MAIL' h/s in violet, minor faults. 1949 (c.) illustrated packet tag with printed 'QUEEN BEE Deliver Quickly', to Griffith NSW with 1½d x2 tied by 'SCONE' cds, staple holes where affixed to the tiny 'hive'. One of the most unusual postal articles we have ever seen, all the more so for the unintentionally humorous 'DIRECTIONS FOR INTRODUCING' printed on the reverse. We know of only three other such items: Kevin Nelson's 1938 tag by air sold at our auction of 20.11.2010 for $930. See also Lot 2324. [Between 1.7.1949 & 30.11.1950, the samples rate was 1½d per 2oz x2]

1956 commercial airmail cover to Samoa with Melbourne 6d meter for an unidentified user, obvious damage from immersion & corner piece missing at L/L, very fine strike of the straight-line 'SOILED MAIL EX VASU' h/s in violet applied at Apia. The correct rate was 1/- but the underpayment was not detected. [The mail was flown to Fiji, then per wooden motorship 'Vasu' which foundered in rough seas about 300km N of Tonga, and was abandoned. Brian Peace at page 322 states that "29 pieces of mail were recovered". A similarly shortpaid cover sold at our auction of 14.8.2004 for $470]

1965 (Dec 5) standard-size envelope-front apparently used as an address label on a larger article registered to Germany with rare solo franking of Navigators £1 Bass tied by Brisbane cds, 'BRISBANE BULK' R label alongside plus red 'EXPRESS' label & blue/white 'LETTER' label indicating full airmail postage was paid so for it not to be treated as Second Class Mail, addressee's arrival docketing of "8/12". A lovely item. The rate was 2/3d per ½oz x8 + 2/- registration = 20/- (£1).

One of the most unusual postal articles we have ever seen, all the more so for the unintentionally humorous 'DIRECTIONS FOR INTRODUCING' printed on the reverse that commences "Kill your old queen..."
