1913 commercial usage of Victorian 1912 3d Registration Envelope with small boxed 'REGISTERED' Stieg #C13 to South Melbourne uprated with Kangaroo 1d tied by manuscript "Wattle/Vale/RO", superb 'NAGAMBIE - 712' duplex on the embossed stamp, minor soiling on the face. An extraordinary usage & an exceptional State/Commonwealth combination franking. Only a few used examples of this envelope have been recorded. [Wattle Vale is 8km WSW of Nagambie. Opened as a Receiving Office 1.3.1907; PO 1.7.1927; closed 14.10.1964. This is the only RO-period marking recorded for Wattle Vale & the only such Victorian RO manuscript cancel we have seen]

1914 (Sep 26) apparently commercial cover to Pennsylvania with scarce franking of Engraved 6d Kookaburra (Cat $2500 on cover) tied by 'REGISTERED/SYDNEY NSW' cds, red & black/white R label overstruck with US boxed 'REGISTERED/NO...' h/s in purple, plain censor label with 'OPENED BY CENSOR' h/s in violet affixed at Sydney & slightly over the stamp, Chicago transit & Philadelphia arrival backstamp, professionally cleaned on the face. [The rate was 2½d + 3d registration: convenience overpayment of ½d] This is stated to be the earliest recorded usage on commercial cover. The ACSC states the First Day of Issue was 26.8.1914, at Brisbane only & that there is a cover dated 1SE14 - the FDI at Sydney - in the Royal Collection.

1915 (Mar 15) cover to the Agency for Prisoners of War in Switzerland endorsed on the flap "C Baur/Ing/Hobart/ Bruny Island/Tasmania" with Kangaroo ½d green + KGV 1d red pair tied by Hobart cds, scarce black/white 'OPENED BY CENSOR' label & 'CH1/[crown]/PASSED BY/CENSOR' h/s of Hobart, Geneva arrival b/s of 18IV15. A POW rarity. [This camp was so insignificant that Emery didn't mention it in either of his books & neither does the Bruny Island Historical Society website! At it's 'peak' only 58 internees were held on Bruny Island. By mid-1915 they had been transferred to Holsworthy Camp in NSW. A similar unstamped & taxed cover was sold in our auction on 27.7.2009 for $2563]

1920 (Mar 11) Empire rate use of KGV 1d Letter Card with view of 'WALHALLA/VICTORIA' to "Tel Aviv/Jaffa" uprated with KGV ½d green for the war tax & tied by 'MOUNT MAGNET/WESTN AUST' cds, superb 'T' h/s overstruck but hardly obliterated with bars cancel of Perth, 'PORT TAUFIQ' & 'PORT SAID' transit b/s, a second superb 'T' h/s presumably applied on arrival at Tel Aviv, minor blemishes. [The message is entirely in Hebrew with a brief note at the end in English. Palestine was an Empire detination but the mail clerk must have thought it was 'foreign' & sought to tax it accordingly. This was corrected at Perth but perhaps the Palestinian post office wan't sure either!]

1940 (June 27) long cover to London "via Australia/Hong Kong/Canada/England" with 9d Platypus, 2/- Roo and Robes 5/- 10/- & £1 pair tied by Sydney cds, plain brown paper censor label & Passed cachet in violet, quite spotty & wrinkled but rare. [The Mediterranean Route was cut on 10th June 1940 when Italy entered the War. The trans-Pacific 'Clipper' route via New Zealand commenced 19.7.1940 so the sender selected the rather expensive via Hong Kong route for which the All Up Air rate was 6/5d per ½oz x9. Even single-rate covers posted in this 5-week window are rare]
