1940s illustrated parcel address labels 1) for John Martin & Co (Adelaide) underpaid with 3/4d meter but not taxed, a bit grubby; 2) Barry & Roberts (Brisbane) with 1d 9d & 5/- Robes, repaired along heavy horizontal fold clear of the stamps; and 3) Sanitarium Health Food Co (Hobart) with 1d 6d & 1/6d x2. A very scarce trio from the 'smaller' States. (Qty 3) (Image1)

1945 (Sep) makeshift parcel label fashioned from an envelope with 'KILLERBYS STORES/BUSSELTON' h/s & typed list of the contents, 1/- Lyrebird strip of 3, 6d Kookaburra & 1d (damaged) tied by faint 'BUSSELTON/WA' cds, several holes from where it was affixed to the package. Most unusual.

1945 (Nov) black/pink 'PARCEL POST' label with 1d x3 & 4d Koala strip of 3 tied by faint GPO Sydney cds, very fine 'NAVAL SERVICE' h/s in rosine, weight declared as 4 pounds. A rarity: the only such Forces Concessional Rate parcel item we have seen. The rate was 1/3d for a parcel weighing between 3 & 5 pounds.

1946 (c.) Farmer & Co (Sydney) parcel address label with 'GIFT' h/s in violet, 1d 6d Kookaburra & 1/6d Hermes x2 tied by 'dumb' parcel-roller, on arrival endorsed "C" in blue with Postage Due 3d & 1/- tied by indistinct cds, ironed-out wrinkling. [If the parcel weighed more than 7 pounds, the short-payment would have been 2/3d plus fine of 2/3d = 4/6d. In this instance, the 1/3d must have been a Customs fee. Other suggestions welcome]

1946 (Dec 17) Myer label of the same format as the embossed 3/7d & 5/10d labels but with no embossed stamp, 5½d Emu x2 & 1/- Lyrebird tied by Melbourne parcel-roller, ironed-out minor creasing/wrinkling. [1/11d was the rate for a parcel weighing less than 3 pounds. The limited demand for this rate ment it was unviable to produce a 1/11d die]

1947 (April 18) red/white 'PARCEL POST' label with 3d purple-brown, 2/- Kangaroo pair & 5/- Robes tied by very fine 'RAINBOW/VIC' cds, black/white label with finat mss "Rainbow", some wrinkling & minor toning. We are baffled by the rate. 5/10d was for the maximum parcel weight of between 7 & 11 pounds. Was there a previously unrecorded - and apparently ungazetted - rate of 9/3d (or 9/- + 3d registration) for up to, say, 15 pounds. Suggestions invited.

1947 (Oct) red/white 'PARCEL POST' label with 1/4d magenta & 5/- Robes tied by light strikes of the rubber cds of West Maitland (NSW), also with black/deep red 'INSURED/...' label & red/white 'INSURED PARCEL' label, peripheral defects & rather soiled, affixed to a piece of white paper. The only insured food parcel we have seen. The rate was 5/10d + 6d for insurance up to £5, although 4d would have adequate]

1948 (c.) red/white 'PARCEL POST' label with rare franking of Robes 5/- on Thin Paper (undercatalogued at $400 on cover) & KGVI 1/4d maroon tied by largely very fine 'RIALTO/MELBOURNE VIC' cds, minor corner fault at L/R & minor soiling. The extra 6d was probably 3d registration + 3d insurance up to £2. [The Thin Paper 5/- is very rarely seen on any sort of commercial article & should be worth a lot more than $400 on cover. 1948 & 1949 1948 Myer Emporium label as for the embossed issues but unstamped, to London with 5/10d meter, quite fine; also 1949 Myer label of similar format but with a more formal corporate logo & the text reset, with 3/7d meter, soiled & the sender's details removed. [Remarkably, the sender of the first item was resident in India! A similar pair of intact labels, both with 5/10d meter, sold at our auction of 1.9.2018 for $1675] (Qty 2)

'bona fide gift' label & black/white perforated 'PARCEL POST SYDNEY NSW/Farmer's' label, Scout Jamboree 2½d pair & KGVI 7½d blue pair & block of 8 tied by 'dumb' parcel-roller cancels. On 9.7.1951, the rate for a parcel weighing up to 7 pounds was increased to 6/10d, a 90% increase! [Brickfield Hill PO was located at Hordern's store. Was there also a post office in Farmer's building? Was the dumb roller applied at Farmer's or at the GPO?]
