Of five covers and rebacked front; four four-horse stagecoach designs including small illustration with large "Overland Mail, Via Placerville and Salt Lake." imprint alongside, rebacked front with medium size illustration and "Per Overland Mail Via Los Angeles" above and Wm. E. Loomis imprint below, and two similar large size illustrations with "St. Louis" and "New York" banners on horses, one on white cover (address panel cut out) and on yellow cover (locally addressed in Santa Cruz), and two similar six-horse stagecoach designs with "From San Francisco Via Los Angeles" banner above horses, one with Randall & Co. imprint and other with Hutching & Rosenfield imprint; covers with various flaws including missing partial/all stamps, etc., Decent Appearance, a scarce reference group.

The Pioneer Stage Co. began in the summer of 1859 when J.B. Crandell drove the first coach over the Sierra Nevada mountains to Carson Valley. Over the next years the Pioneer Stage Co. became a premier transportation service. In November 1866 they consolidated with other overland stage and express companies into the Wells, Fargo & Company.

Pioneer Stage Company, Sacramento to Virginia, Virginia Office, Nov 4th, 1865. Illustrated six-horse stagecoach letterhead and dateline on one page letter written by Hiram S. Rumfield to Mrs Rumfield in Tiffin, O., letter regarding trip from Salt Lake City with Mr. Tracy (either James or Theodore Tracy) and making the 400 mile journey in one day and twenty hours (Tracy's idea to make a fast run), letter signed "Hiram", Very Fine, with accompanying letter from Bob Chandler regarding this letter, ex-Pearce.

Hiram S. Rumfield was the Assistant Treasurer of the Overland Mail Co.
