NAVAL MAIL 1798-1946: An accumulation of covers and letters to/from military personnel, mostly naval inc. 1798 printed copy of letter from Nelson to "My Dear Lloyd"; 1823 EL from Jedburgh to Captain of H.M. ROYAL MARINES 1819 - 1894: A well researched collection of E's & EL's to/from serving personnel in the Royal Marines. 1840 prepaid letter rated 1d during 4d postage period re legal position relating to recruitment; 1860 cover with 'Returned for 6 Postage' hs as recipient was in transit to Malta on HMS James Watt; 1876 letter with 'Lisboa' & oval 'Franca' hs to Captain Heaslop R.M.A. on HMS Resistance off Lisbon with the Channel Squadron; 1878 concessionary rated letter from Bahia to London from private on board HMS Tenedos; 1879 EL's to Major Heaslop on HMS Achilles with the Mediterranean Squadron; 1880 cover rated 7½d and forwarded through Lisbon with oval 'Franca' hs to a Captain on HMS Resistance; 1888 uprated postal stationery card from Lt. ALLAN LINE ADVERTISING ENV.: 1882 Havana advertising env. for the Allan Ship Lines sent to New York endorsed "Pr Steam Ship Knickerbocker" with a pair of Cuba 5c tied to env. with large purple oval "CORREOS/FEB 11 1882/HABANA" adjacent & 'dumbbell' shaped "NEW YORK/FEB/15/PAID/FULL" cds on reverse. Front of env. decorated with large "[Leve &]Alden/TOURS OFFICE/207/BROADWAY" and illustrated panel on rear depicting sailing & steam ships with the wording "LEVE & ALDEN'S AMERICAN TOURS/Including all Summer and Winter Resorts/and Points of Interest in America./GENERAL PASSENGER AGENTS/ALLAN LINE/TO AND FROM EUROPE". An exceptional item. Also 1883 env. posted to Bordeaux franked with a QV 2½d tied with a fine Glasgow "159" duplex and a Bordeaux receiving cds on reverse with a very fine vignette of "JAMES & ALEXANDER ALLAN/[ship]/70 GREAT CLYDE ST, GLASGOW" on the flap.
