1898 CHINA to AUSTRIA PRE-UPU, a nice postcard showing a hand tinted view of the Shanghai Horse Race Clubhouse, mailed at the SHANGHAI post office on APR25-1898 and addressed to VIENNA, pre-UPU China stamps were not valid for International delivery so China stamps #88(x2),99(x3) were added only to cover the 4c local postcard rate to the SHANGHAI-BPO (British Post Office) where International mail could be processed, a Hong-Kong #36b(pair) was added to pay the 4c UPU postcard rate, routing was then to HONG KONG on APR 28th where it missed the APR 23rd Empress of India sailing and was likely sent by closed bag by American PMSSCo ship to Seattle + train to New York + ship to Europe + train to VIENNA with an arrival on MAY 30th, a rare rate with VF est ($750+ US) (Image)
