Cat No:18b
1852 Queen-on-Throne Recess by Thomas Ham 2d purple-brown SG 18b [W-M] a huge example with outer framelines on three sides, light '5' Barred Oval, Cat £30. Superb! [The Engraved stamps are significantly scarcer than most of the higher-priced Lithographs]
1854-59 Shilling Octagonal Imperf 1/- blue SG 25 [35] with Major Retouch from the Adjoining Unit at Top to above the 'R' of 'VICTORIA', margins good to large (except at base where just shaved) serendipitously with part of the adjoining unit at top clearly showing that the retouch extends between both stamps, minor faults, remarkably the Melbourne cancel is entirely clear of the retouch. An important specialist item. Ex Geoff Kellow RDP. [See Kellow at page 83 where he illustrates the same retouch on perforated stamps. Sold at the Prestige auction of 13.9.2008 for $465]
1854-59 Shilling Octagonal Perf 12 1/- indigo-blue SG 81b [1] with the remarkable Thumb-Print at Upper-Left Variety, Melbourne duplex cancel largely clear of the variety. Ex Geoff Kellow. [Probably the finest of the very few examples recorded. Sold at the Prestige auction of 5.9.2009 for $510]
1857-63 Emblems Good Quality Wove Paper No Wmk Rouletted 1d pale emerald SG 62 horizontal strip of 4, rouletted on all sides but cut somewhat carelessly from the sheet, the last unit thinned, light indistinct numeral cancels, Cat £128++. Ex Charles Lathrop Pack. [Stated to be the equal-largest recorded multiple. Ken Barelli's two very fine blocks of 4 sold for $1207 each]
1886-96 Fergusson & Mitchell High Values £5 pale blue & maroon SG 324 CTO with partial Melbourne 1900 cds, a couple of nibbled perfs at top right, Cat £200.
1886-96 Fergusson & Mitchell High Values £6 yellow & pale blue with the Watermark Sideways SG 325, a couple of minor aging marks on perf tips at top, CTO with almost-complete Melbourne 'FE 1/01' cds, Cat £225+ for SG 325a with the Watermark Upright. [Geoff Kellow states "There was one printing up to 1900 ... on V over Crown (V2) paper, watermark upright, line perf 12½..." but does not mention stamps with the watermark sideways]
1886-96 Fergusson & Mitchell High Values £9 apple-green & rosine (analine) SG 328v CTO with partial Melbourne 1900 cds, no gum, Cat £325 for normal 'non-aniline'. The aniline ink shows through clearly on the back of the stamp. Kellow states "There was one printing up to 1900", presumably with both non-aniline & aniline inks used.
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A 1d Die III Perf 12½ on Thin Pre-Gummed Paper ACSC V49 (SG 417d) 'CA' Monogram block of 8 (2x4) #V49z, reperforated vertically between the columns & the left-hand strip Officially Substituted with several of the characteristic small paper tabs, Cat $300+ for the Double Perfs plus a premium for the monogram. An exceptional specialist piece.

CARRIER STAMPS: c.1930s Yellow Express Carriers 'CARTAGE PAID / S' private carrier label showing a black & yellow vintage van in front of Melbourne city buildings, tied by black manuscript pencil cancel to a Pelaco shirt-collar box addressed to "McCABE/STH MELB", non-contemporary annotation hardly detracts, the label with a couple of minor bends and slight aging marks on box. A very scarce survivor. The label is perforated at top, colour-rouletted at left and imperforate at right and at base.
Yellow Express Carriers commenced business in 1926, and the parcels delivery business was established in 1929. Having survived the Great Depression, their Melbourne fleet had grown to 200 vehicles by 1933. In 1946 they introduced mechanical parcel sorting equipment at their Sydney site, and in 1947 they successfully moved the entire Kilmore Racecourse grandstand from the eastern side of the ground to the western side without dismantling it!
