Matthews in Montreal to Michilimackmac, Michigan Territory, "Paid" straightline with manuscript "6" pence rate and "Via Albany" directive, "Paid" crossed out and rated "18-1/2" cents (should have been 25c for over 400 miles), v.f. 1848 (17 March) FL from Lansing, Michigan to Rochester New York, with "March 22 Michigan, Mic." and "X" in circle, signed James Seymor alongside, fine (in 1844, residents of nearby North Settlement built a dam and mill in what is now North Lansing, Michigan. Their employer, James Seymour, was a land speculator from New York. Recognizing an opportunity, Seymour proposed that the Michigan legislature, which was deadlocked over the site of a new capital, accept his water-power site in the yet-to-be developed wilderness) (Image)

1850 San Francisco, Cal 10 Dec, red cds and matching "12 1/2" cent rating handstamp, FL with integral address leaf to Hangtown, California (contents letter mentions "The steamers "Gen. Warren", "Columbus" and mail steamer "Carolina" arrived here from Panama bringing two-week late intelligence from the states - There are no news of any importance, Dr. Grays Uncle (A. Eastin) has sold out his gambling saloon and is going home on the steamer Isthmus. I called on Gen. the editor of the "Pacific News" and he has given me a permanent situation"), fine cover, ex-Risvold (Hangtown was established as Old Dry Diggin's in 1848. Because of the influx of riffraff and criminals, who committed robberies and murders, the irate citizens took matters into their own hands and flogged or hanged the perpetrators and by 1849 the place was being called Hangtown. On April 9, 1850 the Post Office was established as Placerville, but it was not until 13 May, 1854 that the town was incorporated under that name) (Image)
