Estimate  $100 - 150. This design shows the location of the Thompson & Hitchcock building at 149 Pearl Street at Beaver Street with Wall Street beyond. According to Kutz (Gold Fever, pg. 62): "The early miners formed syndicates and worked as a group using 'Long Toms' to extract the gold. In essence it was an elongated sluice box with riffles or sacking in the bottom to catch the gold. Content states "…we feel alarmed here since the Declaration of War…" Examples of letters clearly marked on their outers as going by such Cartels are relatively rare Charged "2/3d." being 1/3d. to Falmouth plus 1/- inland which should have been reduced by 1d. Addressed to Ayr, at Portsmouth received the "SHIP-LETTER / Crown / PORTSMOUTH" routed via Glasgow to Ayr. Charged 1/6d. being 4d. ship letter plus 1/2d. inland. (Act of 1812), F.-V.F. "Per D?Prins Van Orange Capt Ysis" Norfolk, Virginia - Deal 1814. The Prins Van Orange took the Minister (Ambassador) for the Netherlands from Amsterdam to Boston in the summer of 1814 under a Flag of Truce as a neutral vessel. On the Prins Van Orange?s return to Amsterdam the vessel, again under a Flag of Truce, made land fall at Deal, Kent to drop letters and probably passengers and freight. The entire shown is dated "Norfolk Aug 11th 1814" and was sent under separate outer to Boston to be endorsed "Boston Aug 30. 1814. Recd & forwarded by Yost Plimpton, Marett & Dorr" to be put onto the Prins Van Orange. Addressed to Ayr, Scotland and struck with the "Ship Letter / Crown / DEAL" (Tabeart S7 last recorded use). Weak London transit on reverse and routed through Glasgow arriving there 22nd October 1814.; cover tear at top, F.-V.F. Estimate  $2,000 - 3,000. Total Postage due on delivery shown as "4/6½", actual treble letter rate charge being:-Ship Letter 4d.Deal - London - Glasgow - Ayr 545 miles (1/3d. x 3) 3/9d.Scottish border wheel tax ½d.Total actually due should have been 4/1½d. $0 (Image)

"Per Steamer PERSIA" Two Part Straight Line Handstamp Applied by Sender on Folded Letter from New York to France, 1859. While it was quite customary for senders to specify which ship they wanted to carry their letters, this was nearly always done by manuscript endorsement, rather than handstamp. The sender in this case was William Schall and Co., and we know of only one other firm that used a two-part handstamp in this manner, Very Fine. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. $0 (Image)

Embossed red cameo design on cover franked with 1851 3¢ dull red with pen cancels, postmarked red "Goodyears Bar, Cal, Feb 6" cds addressed to Sacramento, minor deterioration at upper left & slightly reduced at right, F.-V.F., thought to be the only known example. Estimate  $200 - 300. Cover illustrated in Coburn's "Letters of Gold" (page 232). The grizzly bear is the official California state animal and is featured on the California State Flag, which was adopted in 1911. The grizzly bear first appeared on the banner raised over Sonoma during the Bear Flag Revolt against Mexican rule in June of 1846. The original Bear Flag was lost in the fire that followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. $0 (Image)
