Originating at San Francisco January 7, 1855 and addressed to England, carried under separate cover by Wells Fargo to New York City, where their blue New York oval handstamp was struck on the reverse; despite a manuscript "Paid thro" on the face, the letter was sent unpaid by American packet, with the New York exchange office's 21¢ debit cds and British 1/- [due] rate marking, Liverpool and Sheffield handstamps on reverse, Very Fine and rare.
