Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-15) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank and "Paid 25 Cts." printed surcharge corresponding to the Virginia Pony rate (after January 1863 to March 1865), S. Sinsheimer correspondence to San Francisco, Extremely Fine and choice. Estimate  $400 - 600. Roughly half of the Wells Fargo covers with 25 Cents surcharges that are known are from the S. Sinsheimer correspondence. Most are used from Nevada, and some have dockets in pencil that are year dated 1863 or 1864. In addition, most if not all are addressed in the same handwriting, which suggests that the surcharged covers from this correspondence were used as return envelopes and once contained orders for merchandise.
