Vanderbilt Line Steamship "Ariel". 3¢ Nesbitt entire uprated with 1851, 3¢ dull red, pair + 17¢ black, posted at Henderson, Kentucky 30th July prepaid 29 cents of which 21 cents was the rate via France to Bavaria, Schwarzburg Sondershausen being in Thuringia which was subject to Bavarian rates. Put onto the Ariel on 8th August 1857 with rare U.S. Pkt. straight line handstamp and transferred at Southampton on 20th. Routed via Aachen (back stamped 22nd August).
