Valley Ford (Cal.) (Sonoma), improvised Cal. town datestamp using Wells Fargo & Co. oval struck at edge of cover ties 2¢ vermilion, 3¢ green (183, 184), 3¢ s.e., on yellow cover to Cevio, Switzerland, receiving backstamps (Jan. 29 and 30, 1879), Very Fine, a fascinating and rare cover, ex-Andromeda. Estimate  $500 - 750. Valley Ford in Sonoma County Cal. had a Wells Fargo office starting in 1870 and opened its post office in 1876, but the earliest Valley Ford postmarked cover is dated Mar. 17, 1879, it appears that the postmaster improvised by using his Wells Fargo & Co. device and carefully striking the company name off the envelope. $0 (Image)
