Uncle Sam
image Sale No: 57
Lot No:4288
Symbol:

Uncle Sam, clearly applied straightline stencil marking on orange buff cover from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., entered the mails with red "New Orleans La. Jan 21" cds and matching "Steam 5" due rating handstamp, endorsed "pr Uncle Sam" at top, bearing 5¢ red brown (1), four margins, worn impression and cancelled by red grid but does not belong, considerable ink erosion in writing and bleed-thru on inside, vertical file folds, one of which passes thru stamp, otherwise Fine, Illustrated in Milgram on page 701., ex-Matthies, Simmons, Peyton, Warm, Kapiloff and Mirsky.; signed "Guaranteed Genuine by Ezra D. Cole" on reverse, with 2012 P.F. certificate noting stamp did not originate. Milgram No. 1396  Estimate $1,500 - 2,000. Although this is a well-pedigreed cover, the presence of the "Steam 5" due marking makes the 5¢ 1847 stamp superfluous and the red cancel does not match the New Orleans cds. We have estimated the cover appropriately. The "Uncle Sam" was built in 1849 and dismantled in 1859.We record only two examples of the "Uncle Sam" straightline stencil marking:1. Jan. 21, cover from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., 5¢ 1847 stamp doesn't belong, the cover offered here.2. 1852, folded letter to Saint Louis Mo. bearing 3¢ 1851 issue tied by stencil and "Steam" marking. ex Klein-Somdal. $0 (Image)
