Steamer Pennsylvania, fancy blue shield handstamp on buff cover to Madisonville Mo., bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by St. Louis "Steam" straightline handstamp, routed north to either Louisiana or Hannibal on the Mississippi River; small faults including partial flap and upper right corner repair that has non-archival tape mostly on back, Fine, Illustrated in Milgram on page 558., ex Klein-Somdal; with 2004 P.F. certificate. Milgram No. 1081  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. The "Pennsylvania" was built in 1854 and ran Pittsburgh to Cincinnati. She exploded her boilers on June 13th 1858 taking, amongst the 154 estimated deaths, the brother of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) who was an apprentice pilot. $0 (Image)
