Steamer Josiah Lawrence, choice strike of red octagonal handstamp on buff cover to Greensburg La. endorsed "Via N Orleans", entered mails with red "New Orleans La. Apr 2" cds and matching "Way 6" rating handstamp, docketed "Recd Apl 6" at right; mended bottom corners, F.-V.F., a rare marking, Illustrated by Milgram on page 730. Milgram No. 730  Estimate $300 - 400. Greensburg La. was located on the post road 44 miles northeast of Baton Rouge. Route 4829 was contracted by the trip, the "Josiah Lawrence" ran the New Orleans to St. Louis trade from 1848 as a freight boat and clearly ran contract mail trips. $0 (Image)
