Steamboat Independence. Manuscript endorsement on folded letter datelined "New Orleans, Louisiana, Feb. 7, 1822 " to Monroe (Ouachita) Louisiana, docketed as being from the same steamer, two light file folds, Very Fine and rare, the Independence was one of the pioneer steamboats, being the first to travel up the Missouri River in 1822, this example is believed to the earliest recorded folded letter carried on the Ouachita River, it traveled up the Mississippi, Black, Red and Ouachita Rivers to Monroe, a wonderful usage from this historic steamer; with 1996 P.F. certificate.
