Official Seal, 1879, brown. Two and a half examples affixed to reseal cover bearing 1857 10¢ green (35) cancelled by manuscript "X" and matching "E. Orleans Ms. Dec" postmark on 1859 cover to the captain of Ship "Endeavor" in care of forwarding agent in Manzanillo, Mexico, origin Dec. 18, 1859 contents, the letter was delayed for 27 years and sent to the Dead Letter Office with "Colima, E.U.M., 16 SET 1886" backstamp, red manuscript. "Postmaster, will you please deliver this letter to Miss T. Doane Mother of Capt Alfred Doane, if living, or to the person addressed on his nearest relatives or descendants. Dead Letter Office. Oct 19th /86" and readdressed to East Orleans, docketed on reverse "Received in Newtonville, Nov 2nd 6:30pm, 1886, A.D."; small abrasion, Fine. Scott No. OX2a  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. It is interesting to note that the 1857 10¢ issue was demonetized 26 years earlier due to the Civil War. $0 (Image)

Official Seal, 1879, brown. Three seals affixed to Nesbitt 18¢ red (U70) entire with Wells Fargo imprint addressed to an attorney in Jersey City, N.J. at six-times the 3¢ letter rate, purple "Registered, Jun 28 1883, San Francisco Cal." postmark, letter opened and reposted with 1¢ blue (206) and 10c brown (209) strip of three on reverse for seven-times the 3¢ letter rate (3½ oz.) plus 10¢ registry fee back to sender with purple "Registered, Jersey City, N.J. Aug 30 1883" framed postmark, San Francisco Sep. 7 arrival, reverse has residue from additional adhesives removed prior to reposting, it is likely the seals were added when the recipient resealed the envelope, some faults, Fine and unusual use. Official Seal, 1879, brown. Two singles, one over edge and other on back, used to reclose 1890 registered cover from Germany bearing German 10pf. (two) and 20pf. (single & pair) to San Francisco Cal., attempted delivery but unclaimed and sent to D.L.O., returned to Germany where two different seals applied: top left is a German railway post office seal and two at top right are city seals of the Wallendorf post office; two filing punches, Fine, a rare two country use with three different seal types. Two singles, affixed to 5¢ Garfield (U223) entire to Austria also bearing 6¢ lake (282) tied by Philadelphia Jan. 20 1895 duplex, returned to sender after failed delivery via the Dead Letter Office due to lack of return address, Philadelphia added the 1888 chocolate (OX5) seal; faulty, Fine, an unusual use with both engraved and typographed seals.
