Official Seal - Registry, 1872, green. Top sheet margin pane of 15, without gum, bold color, pencil "From Geo. H. Worthington Sale, on "Buy Bid"" notation in upper right margin by George Grinnell, reinforced perfs with some separation, small repaired margin nick at bottom left, otherwise Very Fine, a lovely and rare pane, one of four top panes recorded, ex Worthington. Scott No. OXF1  $2,500. George Grinnell, well known for his "find" of Hawaiian Missionary stamps, formed one of the first comprehensive collections of official seals. Cancelled by "New-York Jun 12" cds and affixed at left on yellow cover to Corning N.Y., bearing 3¢ green (158) tied by grid cancel duplexed with same matching "New-York N.Y. Jun 12" cds, "G. W. Brown" signature at left as typical when an envelope was opened in error; reduced a bit at left, Fine, a unique registry seal used to repair an envelope, ex-Gottlieb, Albert. Scott No. OXF1  Estimate $500 - 750. The registry seal was apparently used to reclose this letter, which was opened in error by the N.Y. post office. The seal and stamp have matching circular datestamps dating from the early 1870s. $0 (Image)
