New York, N.Y., U.S. City Despatch Post, 1842, 3¢ Black on Grayish, Bottom Left Corner Margin Single, a magnificent example showing full sheet margin selvage, tied by red "U.S." in octagon handstamp on locally addressed 1842 folded letter sheet, with matching "U.S. City Despatch Post, Oct. 18, 1 O'Clock" cds alongside; left sideflap missing, Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Caspary, Boker, Klein and Kapiloff; with 1988 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 6LB1 $12,000. THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE GREIG'S ADHESIVE USED PROVISIONALLY AS A GOVERNMENT SEMI-OFFICIAL CARRIER. The sale of Greig's private post to the government post office was completed in mid-August of 1842. This issue was the first official usage of a postage stamp in the United States.
