New York, N.Y., U.S. City Despatch Post, 1842, 3¢ Black on Grayish, Bottom Left Corner Margin Single, a magnificent example showing full sheet margin selvage, tied by red "U.S." in octagon handstamp on locally addressed 1842 folded letter sheet, with matching "U.S. City Despatch Post, Oct. 18, 1 O'Clock" cds alongside; left sideflap missing, Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Caspary, Boker, Klein and Kapiloff; with 1988 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 6LB1  $12,000. THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE GREIG'S ADHESIVE USED PROVISIONALLY AS A GOVERNMENT SEMI-OFFICIAL CARRIER. The sale of Greig's private post to the government post office was completed in mid-August of 1842. This issue was the first official usage of a postage stamp in the United States. There are approximately 15 verified genuine on cover usages recorded, with many not tied or in poor condition. This example is by far the finest extant. $0 (Image)
