Mails Between California and Britain At the 29 Cent Rate. On 1st July 1851 the rates for mails to Britain from the West Coast via New York were reduced from 59 cents (2 Shillings 5½ Pence) to 29 cents (1 Shilling 2½ Pence). Entire dated "Barque "Duchess of Clarence" San Francisco July 14th 1852" unpaid and bagged for Britain. Rated in manuscript on arrival at Liverpool at "1/2½". Reverse of cover showing the Liverpool arrival stamp of August 29th 1852, the ART-5 / B.R. PKT and transit stamps of Wakefield and Northalerton with Stokesly arrival, all of the 30th August., Very Fine. Estimate  $500 - 750. Carried on the following route and vessels:- San Francisco 15th July 1852 to Panama 2nd August on the S.S. Northerner (Pacific Mail Steam Ship Co.).Chargres 4th August to Charleston 11th August on S.S. Southerner. (New York and Charleston Steam Ship Line).New York 18th August to Liverpool 29th August on S.S. Niagara. (British & North American Royal Mail Steam Ship Company).The Treaty specified the rate under Article 5 of the treaty and handstamps were applied at Liverpool stating "ART-5 / B.R.
