Langton's Pioneer Express, Paid, fancy black frank (LAN-002) on 1861, 3¢ pink entire to Vermont, additionally franked with 1861 3¢ rose affixed over blue oval "Alleghany" handstamp (applied by Langton's prior to use), tied by "New York" double circle postmark & fancy geometric cancel, entire struck with red "Forest City" handstamp in rectangle at top & 2nd strike on reverse; small sealed tear at top affecting Forest City marking, slightly reduced at right, Very Fine. Estimate $300 - 400. THE UNIQUE LANGTON'S FOREST CITY MARKING IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL LANGTON HANDSTAMPS. Starting in Alleghany, Sierra Co., this entire then moved north to Forest City where a red straight line cancel was applied to the front and back of envelope. Langton carried, most likely to Placerville, on to San Francisco and from there to New York. Placed in the U.S. Mail at New York but postal authorities required the addition of 1861 3¢ stamp because the blue Alleghany oval had canceled the indicia. $0 (Image)
