Holladay Overland Mail & Express Co., black company frank (HLY-001) on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to New York City, entered the U.S. mails with "San Francisco, Cal., Nov 12" cds and matching cogwheel handstamp canceling, unusual crude "Due 3" handstamp at bottom left for double rate; expertly restored cover tears affecting postal marking and indicia at top with part backflap restored, Very Fine appearance. Estimate $300 - 400. The Overland Stage Line became the Holladay Overland Mail and Express Company in February 1866 when Ben Holladay took over the Butterfield Overland Mail Company. In November 1866, Ben Holladay sold out to Wells Fargo. Holladay Overland Mail & Express Co. was covering 2,670 miles with Concord stages. $0 (Image)

Holladay Overland Mail & Express Co., black printed company frank on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to Lexington, Mich., entered the mails with "Laporte, Col., Sep 16" cds canceling; cover slightly reduced at right and a few minor edge tears, otherwise Very Fine, one of two recorded examples of a Colorado postal marking on a Holladay franked envelope and a rare usage of the Laporte handstamp postmark. Estimate $300 - 400. On March 21, 1862 the Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Co. was acquired by Ben Holladay who operated an extensive stage and express business west of the Rocky Mountains.
