General George B. McClellan, multicolor hand painted Magnus patriotic design with framed portrait surrounded by three Zouaves and shield, on cover bearing three 1Ā¢ blue (63) singles, left stamp with s.e. at right, rich color, tied by "Philadelphia Pa. May 1 1862" cds to Hartford Conn.; right stamp with trivial small flaws from edge placement, ex-Walter Senchuk. EstimateĀ $3,000 - 4,000. A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE MAGNUS MCCLELLAN PATRIOTIC COVER. This Magnus patriotic design features Major General George B. McClellan, who organized the Union Army of the Potomac. In 1864, he was the Democratic Party's candidate for president but was defeated by Abraham Lincoln. The initials "CKW" are written on the shield, presumably by the sender. Charles Magnus (1826-1900) was a print publisher, map dealer, bookseller, and stationer in New York City from 1848 to 1899. During the Civil War, he produced about 700 patriotic envelope designs and about 300 illustrated song sheets, using images of allegorical figures, battle scenes, political cartoons, state emblems, and portraits of prominent men. $0 (Image)
