Browns Express (Forwarded By), exceptional strike of blue oval handstamp (BRW-101) on incoming cover to Stockton, Cal., matching "$1." rate handstamp, red "Calais, Me., Jul 21" origin cds with matching "10" rate handstamp, address noting "care of Messrs. Todd & Co."; some light soiling, Very Fine. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. Todd's & Brown's Expresses competed over this area and most likely the recipient had change to Brown as his pickup. William Brown was shot and killed by one of his agents on April 1st, 1853. Adams continued to operate Brown's Express under the Brown name until Adams failed in February of 1855. $0 (Image)
