1932 3¢ Olympic Runner, Large Die Trial Color Proof in Deep Carmine. Die sunk on full size card (154 x 202mm), designed by V.S. McCloskey and engraved by John Eissler, black control number "70020" on reverse, bright fresh rich color with full unblemished card without any spots or toning to detract, Extremely Fine, a delightful proof of this immensely popular Olympic collecting area. Scott No. 718TC1; $10,000  Estimate $5,000 - 7,500. A magnificent large die trial color proof from the Eissler collection. John Eissler was a vignette engraver at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the proofs that were in his collection are large die proofs that are characterized by having the original blue control number removed and a black five-digit number applied, it is through designers such as Eissler, C.A. Brooks and M.D. Fenton that collectors are able to own some of the beautiful and rare proofs that were made in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; this single proof is the only example known of a trial color of any of the Olympic Games issues in private hands; ex-Eissler, Morris Rosen. $0 (Image)
