1887 (Oct. 21) Fredericksted, D.W.I. to Copenhagen, Denmark at the 3¢ Soldiers Mail rate, printed Naval Officer's stationery cover bearing 1885, 3¢ light blue & rose, printing V, pretty pastel color, tied by "Fredericksted 21/10 1887" cds to Denmark at the 3¢ concessionary rate, F.-V.F. Facit No. 6e. Scott No. 6 Estimate $2,000 - 3,000. ONE OF ONLY SIX RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 3¢ DANISH NAVAL OFFICER'S CONCESSIONARY RATE TO DENMARK, AND THE EARLIEST USE OF PRINTED SOLDIER'S MAIL STATIONERY. There are only three recorded concessionary printed form covers dated: Oct. 21, 1887 (offered here), Feb. 23, 1891 (ex-Schnell) and April 9, 1894 (ex-Schnell). The concessionary rate went into effect on January 1, 1887 and required the use of special envelopes. The printing of Soldiers' Mail envelopes was done in the islands and, of course, required some time. While waiting, the postmaster apparently prepared several manuscript versions on 3¢ stationery and three of these are known.References: Illustrated in Danish West Indies, Vol. III, Engstrom on page 22-4, fig. 4. $0 (Image)
