1872 (Aug. 18) Geneva, N.Y. to Geneva, Switzerland, 1870, 1¢ wrapper bearing 1870, 3¢ green (small defect due to placement over edge of wrapper) tied by "Geneva N.Y. Aug 18" duplex, New York "Short Paid via Hamburg" circular handstamp, carried by Hapag Line Cimbria from New York Aug. 22nd to Hamburg Sep. 4th, two strikes of black "Via Hamburg" routing handstamps, large blue crayon "3" and red crayon due markings, reverse with blue crayon "35" rappen due rating, Very Fine and unusual printed matter use. Scott No. 147, W77 Estimate $200 - 300. Since this wrapper was from a U.S. nurseryman, it may have contained a seed catalog. It was prepaid at the 4¢ newspaper rate by the Swiss Treaty. New York apparently found item to be overweight for prepayment and decided to send it short paid by the Hamburg route (3¢ single rate), a new, less expensive rate, striking the very scarce "SHORT PAID/VIA/HAMBURG" handstamp. Basel struck the "VIA HAMBURG" route marking and marked 35 rappen postage due, 10 rappen short postage (2¢) plus 25 rappen insufficiently paid fine. $0 (Image)
