image Sale No: 50
Lot No:226
Symbol:

1870 (Nov. 10) New York, N.Y. to Bordeaux, France, blue folded letter bearing 1869, 10Ā¢ yellowish orange, tied by NYFM circle of wedges, carried by French Line H Lafayette from New York Nov. 16 to Brest arriving Nov. 27, Ligne H (10.22) error entry cds with "8" decimes due h.s., Bordeaux (12.2) arrival backstamp; Very Fine. EstimateĀ  $300 - 400. French mail agent on board steamer erroneously applied circular datestamp LIGNE H PAQ. FR. No.2 (cachet de ligne), normally used on unprocessed mail arriving at the steamship on westward voyages. In fact, he didn't change the date slug from when the marker had been used on the voyage to the U.S. Use of this marking device, instead of the one normally used which showed the letter was from the U.S. (cachet de province), is quite uncommon. Since Paris was under siege when the letter reached France, it was sent to Bordeaux on a route around Paris. $0 (Image)
