1870 (Jun. 10) Havre, France to New York, N.Y., folded letter bearing France 1867, 20c. blue and 1868, 40c. orange, tied by diamond grid cancels, "Le Havre 10 Juin 70" double circle date stamp and red "P.P." framed h.s., carried by NGL Line Hansa from Havre Jun. 11 to New York arriving Jun. 23, "N.Y. Steamship 10, Jun 23" cds, horizontal file fold, F.-V.F. Scott No. France 33, 35 Estimate $150 - 200. Effective 1 January 1870, letters sent by steamship directly from France to the U.S. required a prepayment of 60 centimes per 10 grams. Postage due in New York was 10¢ per ½ oz. North German Lloyd steamers, which normally called at Southampton en route from Bremerhaven to New York, stopped instead at Havre on only eight voyages, each in early 1870. $0 (Image)
