1870 (Feb. 10) Vardal, Norway to La Crosse, Wisc., cover with original Feb. 5 enclosure, Vardal (2.10) and Christiania (2.11) cds, Bremen blue "3" groschen script debit h.s. to U.S., Hamburg (2.16) backstamp, carried by North German Lloyd Line Weser II from Bremerhaven Feb. 19 to New York arriving Mar. 5, "Chicago Direct Mar. 7" cds with "24 / U.S. Notes" depreciated currency h.s., a scarce NGU Treaty cover to the Chicago exchange office with depreciated currency h.s. Estimate  $200 - 300. Letter originated in small hamlet without a post office and was posted at Vardal. 3 groschen for transit from Norway debited to Prussia and marked on reverse by Kiel/Hamburg railway post office, then restated in blue on front by Bremen(?). Postage due consisted of 5¢ unpaid letter fine plus 19¢ in depreciated greenback currency. Letter in closed mail bag from Bremen to Chicago. $0 (Image)
