1868 (Sep. 17) Helsingfors, Finland to Winona, Minnesota, yellow cover with Helsingfors (9.17) origin cds, manuscript "3" groschen due rating on back, Prussia large "3" script due h.s., carried by Hapag Line Hammonia II from Hamburg Sep. 23 to New York arriving Oct. 6, "Chicago Oct 8" cds and "28 / U.S. Notes" depreciated currency h.s.; F.-V.F., a scarce NGU Treaty cover to the Chicago exchange office with depreciated currency h.s. Estimate  $200 - 300. Letter originated in Helsingfors (Helsinki today). Prussian railway clerk marked 3 groschen on reverse for unpaid transit fees owed to Prussia and debited United States in dark blue ink, lower left, the same amount for transit fees from Finland allowed under U.S.-NGU convention. Postage due consisted of 5¢ unpaid letter fine plus 23¢ in depreciated greenback currency. Letter in closed mail bag from Hamburg to Chicago. $0 (Image)
