1867 (Aug. 15) Rocky Hill, Ct. to Scotland, Great Britain, folded wrapper bearing 1867, 3¢ rose endorsed "Via Johnstone" and tied by manuscript "Rocky Hill, Aug. 15/67" postmark, carried by Allan Line Nestorian from Quebec Aug. 16 to Liverpool arriving Aug. 26, bold strike of large "1d" due handstamp for inland postage due, "Johnstone AU 27 '67" arrival backstamp, Very Fine. Scott No. 65  Estimate $300 - 400. Wrapper contained either one newspaper or one pamphlet under 2 ounces and was overpaid 1¢ with 3¢ 1861 adhesive. There were six post offices named Rocky Hill in 1867. This one may have been the one in Connecticut. The determination that an Allan Line steamer carried the wrapper is based on a best fit of sailing dates and supports a Connecticut origin. Houston was a sub office of Johnstone, Scotland and believed to be the location of Huston Manse. $0 (Image)
