1865 (Feb. 10) New York, N.Y. to St. Etienne, France, printed circular at 2¢ printed matter rate prepaid by 1863, 2¢ black, exceptionally well centered, tied by geometric cancel, carried by NGL Line America from New York Feb. 11 to Southampton arriving Feb. 23, red French entry also ties 2¢ and matching red "15" centimes due h.s., Extremely Fine and choice. Scott No. 73  Estimate $300 - 400. Paris used an old 15 decimes handstamp, struck in red, to indicate the postage due, and wrote in pen "cleaned"for centimes. The sender noted in bright red ink that this was an "Open printed Circular" because, as viewed through the paper, it appeared to be a handwritten letter. Actually, it was printed in a manuscript style. $0 (Image)
